We are delighted to announce the unveiling of ‘Vessel‘, Diadimo’s latest collaboration between architects O’Donnell + Tuomey and W/Workshop, at the 13th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2012.

Presented alongside a larger-scale version constructed from stacked pine, the two Vessels offer a contrast in light and shade, craft and making, solidity and porosity.

__

From O’Donnell + Tuomey:

The word vessel is suggestive of embodiment, enshrinement and containment. It carries associations with craft and circulation. Airship, boat, blood, vessel, utensil.

Vessel is a contemplative space hollowed out of solid matter, a light funnel, a lantern chamber, and a passage leading towards our common ground.

Literary and artistic affinities constitute our common ground. Architecture’s deeper resonance is related to its wider culture. The work of other architects, artists, poets, and performers sustains us. They provide inspiration for us to make our own work. Such affinities are part of our cultural context. We have invoked precedent and invited practitioners to contribute to our installation. We have remembered inspirational works and reflected on projects that run parallel to our own pursuits.

__

The 13th International Architecture Exhibition runs until November 25th 2012

Diadimo was presented in Ireland for the first time during the 2012 Kinsale Arts Festival in a specially designed exhibition pavilion.

Reflecting our desire to bring together the worlds of design, craft, art and architecture, the temporary building was conceived as a independent entity sitting between studio and workshop. Constructed from a palate of simple materials, the pavilion was designed to be both highly contextual yet entirely new, the industrial corrugated cladding and timber frame transformed into a delicate and ephemeral structure.

We are delighted to announce the official launch of Diadimo, with the History Chair and Falling Dansu presented for the first time at the Wallpaper* Handmade exhibition during Milan Salone del Mobile 2012.

Now in its third year, the Wallpaper* Handmade exhibition is a championing of craftsmanship and a celebration of collaboration, which this year includes “a unique collection of remarkable creations – from the food truck of the future, a smoking’ barbaque, and a not-so-lazy Susan to a beautiful bureau, a heavy metal bath tub and a hard-working, heavy-drinking table”.

The History Chair is being presented with a bespoke upholstered seat, designed by the london-based fabric designer Erica Wakerly.

The History Chair has always been discussed very much as an individual, and much like a person, it’s personality will be expressed by the way it is dressed. We are planning on producing the chair in three different versions: pure wood, with a leather pad, or with a fabric ‘wrap’. The pure timber form is its naked self, and the leather or fabric seats offer us a chance to shape its character. We have been working with the print and textile designer Erica Wakerly, to develop a fabric for the launch later this month.

With a busy period in the workshop we decided to turn to a man that we have worked with many times before to help work on the construction detailing of the chair, the former principal of Parnham College, Robert Ingham. We initially discussed him modelling just the critical joints, but he felt that it would be better resolved as a whole, and has produced a beautifully finished full-scale ash prototype.
